I am a pretty regular visitor to Holland, and this is my guide to the hash coffeeshop scene. At the moment it is strongly biased towards Amsterdam, where most coffeeshops are, and where most tourists go. But the Netherlands is not just about one city, and I'm slowly expanding this page, as I explore the country. There are now three other towns with brief entries in this guide, and I intend to visit more. The information is based so far on four particular visits. The letters in the guide refer to notes made on one of them:
I do keep revisiting some old favourites and have updated the notes accordingly. However please bear in mind that if a coffeeshop has no "C" or "D" entry, it has not been updated for almost three years now. I have tried to keep things as up to date as possible but would welcome feedback on this guide - e-mail me by clicking here and let me know what you think, of this page or of any coffeeshops I've either visited or missed. Oct. 2002: Further info was supplied on several coffeeshops, including three I've not visited, by a correspondent, Totek. This sterling individual toured Amsterdam in summer 2002 and was good enough to mail me his opinions. These are listed under his pseudonym where appropriate. As he points out, we do agree quite a lot. Big thanks for his help and if there's anyone else out there who has opinions to offer, whether they agree with mine or not, please mail me! You will also notice that (particularly for the small towns) there is some information which is nothing to do with coffeeshops - that is, some suggestions as to how else you might like to spend your time. To just go to Holland and sit in a coffeeshop all day does the place an injustice. For instance, the most mellow couple of hours I think I've ever spent in Holland was spent on the beach at Katwijk-an-Zee (near Leiden) - in December no less. A few suggestions therefore appear on these pages. I don't claim to be an expert on the Dutch coffeeshop scene, any more than someone coming over to visit Britain now and again could be said to be an expert on the British pub scene. The comparison is apt: coffeeshops exhibit just as much variety as pubs or other types of cafés. (See the general information page, which I suggest you read next.) What this page is, then, is just my own collected opinions and observations as a tourist.
