Delft lies between The Hague and Rotterdam and would make a reasonable day trip from both places. It's maybe just a little too far from Amsterdam though - being about 15-20 minutes further down the train line from Leiden. Delft is a classic Dutch small-town - very pretty, very quiet, and certainly not the sort of place you'd stay if you wanted a wild time.

I've only visited Delft on a day trip and it might be the case that there are more coffeeshops than I spotted - but I only spotted two. The first, De Rits, is hard to miss, being on the approach road to/from the railway station. Nevertheless, though I clocked its existence, I didn't visit: as ever, reports are welcome. D: This is a narrow side street connecting Delft's two main canals - perhaps 300 metres or so down from the main square, and just round the corner from the Legermuseum (a military history museum, if you like that sort of thing). It's a classic small-town coffeeshop. By that I mean when you're in the "provinces", away from the bustle of Amsterdam or the relative sophistication of student towns like Leiden, coffeeshops feel just that little bit less respectable; which is no bad thing, incidentally. But when we first walked in here it was like walking into a solid wall of cannabis smoke... no pretensions here that this is anything other than a place to puff. It's not a bad place, not sure it really knows what it wants to be with the decor, and it's quite noisy. But by no means bad, and worth dropping into if you're in the town.

Go visit one of Delft's two churches - one with an alarmingly unperpendicular tower. The other one - the Niuewe Kerk - is the one pictured here. That tower is the second tallest in the whole country (exceeded only by a church in Utrecht). You can climb it for a good view, but absolutely do not do so if you are scared of heights. The stairs will kill you. I wouldn't go up if you're blitzed, either.
Visit the Prinsenhof, a sort of art-gallery museum dating from the 16th century.
