The Value of
Dialogue Project

Dialogue is
a process of communication in which mutual understanding evolves as a result of participants' commitment to appreciating the thoughts, feelings and values of others.


Dialogue is valuable because it

• enables different voices to be heard
• stimulates curiosity, learning and creativity
• stimulates curiosity, learning and creativity
• promotes critical thinking and emotional literacy
• builds connections between individuals and groups
• teaches people ways of resolving their differences and tolerating their diversity.

The October 2000 Value of Dialogue conference explored

• What a dialogue-rich curriculum would look like
• How we might encourage more dialogue in classrooms
• Why dialogue is sometimes difficult to achieve in our schools

The Real Dialogue conferences through 2001 will explore
how schools and other organisations can integrate into their teaching and learning those processes - such as Circle Time, Philosophy for Children and Collaborative Groupwork - that enable young people to practise real dialogue.


The conferences will provide opportunities for you to

• hear from practitioners about the models they use to engage young people in dialogue
• explore with others the issues raised by these models
• share your own experiences and ideas with like-minded people
• develop new strategies for promoting dialogue with young people

The conferences will contribute to the development of the Value of Dialogue project, whose aims are:

• encouraging young people to explore different ways of communicating with each other
• generating understanding of the ways in which people learn and develop through dialogue
• developing with groups of young people a package of multi-media tools for enhancing dialogue

Faculty of Education            Saturday, 6 October The Edinburgh Conference is the Annual Conference of the Values Education Council of the UK

All events start at 10.00 a.m. and finish at 4.00 p.m.
Conference participants will receive a pre-conference brochure, a
post-conference report, buffet lunch and other refreshments.
Those wishing to attend the Belfast conference should apply to the
RTU, Balmoral High School, Black's Rd, Belfast BT10 OHT.

There is a charge of £60 for the other five conferences.
