Wilton Park - The Enchanted Forest
Wilton Park has existed in its present state since 1910, with a large proportion of the wood dating back, 10,000 years to the last Ice Age. Since its creation it has had a long and varied history, however, within the intervening years the Park has become overgrown and fallen into disrepair, especially the 30 acres of Woodland. Wilton Park already has a strong support framework in place, in the form of the Friends of Wilton Park and Batley's Young Environmentalist which includes Batley Boys School, the Young Friends of Wilton Park and the Environmental Task Force, which have facilitated in much of the restoration work
The Enchanted Forest will build further on this work, by constituting an innovative awareness raising programme, which will educate young people on how to effectively manage and protect their local environment and resources.
The emphasis will be on environmental improvements, recycling and education. Children from local schools collect items from home,, e.g. cans or bottle tops and make things such as wind chimes and hanging ornaments.
The Enchanted Forest will include the Circle of Wood, The Labyrinth, Fairy Mounds and a Stone Circle.
Additional schemes will include a mobile theatre, ghost walks and intergenerational projects.
Central Estate - Safe Play Area
A community led project, focusing on the area of land immediately behind the maisonette flats at Springfield Gardens.
Funding has not been achieved by the local TRA to implement the Safe Play Area and work has been carried out by local authority, who only maintain the grassed areas. As such the planted areas around the designated play area have become completely overrun and full of litter.
Over the past few weeks work has been started by local residents to clear the unsightly areas with environment concern co-ordinating local volunteers and providing tools and equipment. Two volunteers have also decided to take advantage of the offer of vocational qualifications and are now working towards NVQ level I in Amenity Horticulture as well as improving their environment.
