Ernest took up painting seriously on his retirement from the heavy engineering industry. Since then he has been developing the very accomplished and spacious style we see here. Although many of these paintings have a marine flavour, Ernest likes to experiment with different approaches, and travels widely to find interesting subject matter. I am often surprised that so many watercolourists seem to shy away from paying proper attention to the skies, when by its nature the medium should lend itself to portraying clouds better than any other. To my mind, a welcome aspect of Ernest's work is that what happens above the skyline is often as important as what goes on below.
