Cuban
Speaker - June CSC
Meeting
On Wednesday 9th June, 7
pm at the
Friends' Meeting House
in place of our
usual Tuesday meeting we have, on Wednesday
a
speaker - Maria Alieda Del Riego - from
Cuba: She works for ICAP and will be touring the UK and Ireland in June.
ICAP - The
Cultural Institution for Friendship with the People - was founded on
December
30 in 1960, as a result of the enthusiasm and solidarity that arose in
the
world for the Cuban Revolution. Its objectives were to promote in all
possible
ways friendship and solidarity with Cuba. It has branches in countries
all over
the world and an international camp 40 km from Havana. This year
is the
50th anniversary of ICAP.
The format will be quite open -
Maria will give a general overview of the current situation in Cuba and
the
blockade, and then invite questions from the audience. There will also
be a
showing of a short film 'Fireflies in the Night' about Cuban doctors
working in
Haiti.
It would be great to see
as
many people as possible at the meeting - it's so important we
show our appreciation and solidarity with Cuba which, despite the
hardships it
continues to suffer, leads the way in showing us how to preserve our
dignity
and humanity. Just contrast the priorities
which Cuba gives to healthcare, education, aid (see below) to the
message being
repeated here and elsewhere that there is no alternative to savage cuts
in
public services.

From September 2009 on the Second Tuesday of the Month,
dates for 2010: 13/4, 11/5,
8/6, 13/7, (August no meeting), 14/9
2nd Tuesday of the month Friends
Meeting House, Mount St. 7.00
Meetings are at 7.00 on the Second Tuesday of the
month . No August
meeting.
All
friends of the Cuban people and their revolution welcome. We
have
a business meeting that lasts 60-90 minutes and then sometimes then
have
a drink and a chat. Every other month or so we have a
focussed
discussion
preceded by a talk or a film.
In
September 2000 we decided to formally make direct
links
with a community in Matanzas province.
This
is a good focus for building the Campaign locally, as well
as being of direct benefit to the community.
