NTUSC offers a range of health and safety service, all of which are available and used by voluntary and statutory groups, small companies (usually those with limited resources) and individuals.
Although, as the name indicates, we have strong trade union links, NTUSC is committed to providing a service for the whole community. We have found that many of those we have helped have become convinced of the benefits of union membership and support especially on issues of health and safety.
NTUSC will assist on many aspects of health and safety, including advice,
information and risk assessments. WE WILL ACT ON BEHALF OF ANY PERSON
WISHING TO MAKE A FORMAL COMPLAINT TO THE ENFORCING AUTHORITY (i.e. the
Health and Safety Executive who have a policy of ensuring anonymity of
complainants if requested) - where necessary we will locate specialist
advisors for major areas of concern.
NTUSC provides a basic screening service which includes audiometric and lung function testing. The equipment used in these processes is both lightweight and portable, permitting its use in any suitable environment, e.g. a quiet office away from main work activities.
Since 1996, over 800 screening tests have been undertaken by NTUSC with 3/4 of these going forward to the initial stages of civil and DSS claims. Test results can, however be utilised within a company's own health surveillance/screening programme.
Profit making companies are charged a nominal fee for the undertaking of tests. Fees are charged either per test or at an overall sum agreed between the company and NTUSC.
Voluntary groups using NTUSC's services are NOT charged a fee although we do ask that immediate expenses be paid, e.g. travel , photocopying etc. if the organisation is able to meet these costs.
Individuals are provided all assistance free of charge.
Training and information sessions can be provided on request. We will locate specialist advisors and training providers for specific health and safety issues such as fire safety, first aid etc. NTUSC has organised a number of seminars in conjunction with or on behalf of statutory/voluntary groups.
In 1997 we helped to organise the pilot project: GOOD HEALTH
/ SHARED BUSINESS seminars - a HSE/TUC initiative which brought together
safety representatives and employers /managers in a combined workplace
safety seminar. The pilot seminar held in Mansfield was successful
and the project has continued in other parts of the UK.
A full-time Health & Safety Worker, funded for 3 years by the National Lottery Charities Board is in place at MUWC. However, financial resources for essential equipment and publications, or for organising events, is extremely limited Occasional donations are made by trade unions, however in the main, running costs are met directly by MUWC and referral fees paid by independent solicitors for non-union claims.
Financial resources (or rather lack of them) are a major problem so
any donations, whether cash or in kind, would be appreciated.
Safety representatives and others actively involved with, or otherwise interested in, Occupational Health and Safety are sought to assist in building and maintaining NTUSC. Participation may bring advantages such as access to information, involvement in conferences and campaigns and support in tackling specific workplace safety issues. Members can be instructed in the use of screening equipment if required, e.g. audiometers.
