News From Nowhere Radical & Community Bookshop has served Liverpool, the North West, and beyond, with the best in radical literature since 1974.

It's run by News From Nowhere Co-operative - a women's collective of five permanent, paid bookshop workers. Very often we have volunteer help too.

What's so radical about NFN?

Answer? The books we stock & the way we work mean that we are not your average bookshop.
We are ...

...a workers' co-operative: The bookshop is owned & managed collectively by the paid workers - tasks, responsibilities & decision-making are shared.
...not for profit: No-one makes money out of the bookshop. Any profit remains within the business, paying for essential running costs & building up our stock. (Workers earn equal rates of pay - currently minimum wage.)
...committed to social change: We hope that the literature we stock empowers & inspires people to make positive changes to the world - from challenging the power of corporate capitalism to breaking down prejudiced attitudes to others & ourselves. Over the years we've supported and promoted many struggles for justice - including anti-apartheid, Troops Out (of Ireland), the Liverpool Dockers, and currently the Stop the War campaign. We refuse to stock anything that is oppressive - racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise.

ROOF FUND APPEAL!!

In 1996 News From Nowhere Bookshop acquired our wonderful building, which now houses ourselves, Windows Poetry Project, The Methodist Somewhere Else Project and other groups. It has proved to be the saving of the bookshop, as other small businesses in Liverpool, and other bookshops nationally, have gone to the wall due to massive rent increases etc. Liverpool is fortunate to have one of the few remaining radical bookshops in the country. Many individuals and organisations contributed with donations and loans to help us buy our present home.

However, recently we have had to carry VITAL repairs & renovations - replacing the roof and repairing exterior walls and upper floors - at a cost of around £150,000.

Five years of searching for grant-aid has raised only £40,000 and so the work has mostly been funded by extending our mortgage from the bank, which will be a massive drain on our finances for another 15 years.

If you have a sum of money to invest, and would prefer your return on it to be the satisfaction of supporting a worthwhile cause rather than boring old cash (!), we would be delighted to put it to good use. We are looking for interest-free loans, preferably of £500 or more, (but every little helps!) - which will help us make savings on our mortgage costs. If you can help, please talk to us about repayment timescale etc.

We need your support!

We are surviving & thriving as a real alternative to the big, commercial booksellers at a time when many other radical bookshops have sadly closed down.

However, to keep going, we depend entirely upon the support of our customers - apart from renting out the rest of our building, our only income is from our sales.

Ways to support us:

1. Buy from us! The simplest & most valuable way to support us! Recommend us to your friends, family & workmates too.

2. Set up a standing order - support us with a small, regular donation. Or this could be a credit loan where your standing order goes towards your future purchases. (Ask us for a standing order form)

3. An interest-free loan - either long-term or to be repaid by us over a fixed period.

4. Donate unwanted books for us to sell second-hand.
