How to order

We can order any book in print in the UK & Ireland - this includes many American and European titles.

We can obtain many popular titles within a few days, & most others in 1 to 2 weeks. (Subject to availability)

Our online order website lists a comprehensive database of books available to order, updated daily.

  • Mail-order available
    (postage costs extra, charged by weight)
  • Credit & Debit card secure online payment facility
    (We do not charge your card until your order is ready to send)

Local customers - order online & collect from the shop
(If you order online, you'll be emailed automatically when your order is ready!)

What we need to know when you place an order

When placing an order by phone, by email, or in person, please give us as much information as you have about the book.

  • title
  • author
  • publisher (if known)
  • ISBN number(if known)
(It is helpful if you can tell us the publisher name, so that if we cannot find the book on our Books In Print database, we can try to track it down by phoning the publisher or their distributor.)

Orders for collection from the shop

  • We may ask for a deposit to be paid before we place your order, especially if the book is expensive. Deposits are usually £1 per £5 of book price. If you cancel your order after the book has arrived, we cannot refund the deposit.

  • If an order remains uncollected 2 weeks after it comes in, we will contact you to remind you. Any orders that are still not collected after 6 weeks will either be returned to supplier or put out for sale. You will lose any deposit.

If you place your order by phone, email or in person, we give you an order reference number and ask for your name & phone number (preferably a land-line number!). (If you do not have a phone we will ask for your address.)

  • Please note: we do not contact you when the book is in. This is because of the large volume of customer orders that we deal with. We ask you to check back with us - we will give you an estimate of how long the order is likely to take.
    BUT ...

... If you place your order online, you will receive an automated email when your books are ready to collect.

Mail order

If you order by phone or email, please tell us your name, address & phone number.

We charge postage costs at usual Post Office rates:
costs vary according to parcel weight.

We send orders at second class postal rates (within UK) unless you specify otherwise

For overseas orders, please specify surface-mail or air-mail - airmail is faster but more expensive!

Payment is needed before we send your order out to you

  • either give us your credit or debit card details by phone when you place the order. (We do not charge your card until your order is ready to send)

  • or if you wish to pay by cheque, we will contact you when the book arrives & advise you of total cost including postage. The order will be sent when we receive your cheque.

If you order online you can give us your credit or debit card details securely!

Overseas orders

We are happy to supply customers outside the UK by mail order, but please be aware that overseas postage costs may increase the cost of your order considerably.

You may prefer instead to support a radical bookshop closer to home by ordering from them.

How long do orders take?

When you place your order we give an estimate of how long your order will take.

  • If our wholesale supplier has the book in stock, it will take 2-3 days.
    (The wholesaler stocks a big range of popular, mostly mainstream or 'bestselling', titles from many different publishers.)
  • Otherwise, we order direct from the publisher - supply times vary, some are faster than others! Most supply within 1-2 weeks.

If you need the order by a certain date, tell us when you order
- please place your order in good time!

(To be on the safe side, order at least two weeks before you need it.)

If your order has not arrived within the expected time:
common reasons:

  • supplier is out of stock
  • the book may be reprinting
The supplier will usually send us a report giving the reason for the delay and expected availability date (if known!) Your book is still on order and will be sent to us as soon as it becomes available again.

  • For books published in the USA: if the UK supplier is out of stock, delays can be as much as 6-8 weeks.
  • If a book is out of print, this means that it is no longer available and we cannot order it.

We're always happy to check up on your order with the supplier, and we'll do our best to find out how long any delays will last.

We only charge your card when your order is ready to send.

Cancelling an order

If you need to cancel your order, please let us know AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

The quickest way is to phone us on 0151 708 7270.
Please be ready to tell us your order details.

If your order has already arrived OR if it has already been sent out by the supplier, then we cannot refund any deposit you may have paid, sorry.

Returns policy

If an item is faulty we are happy to offer either a refund, an exchange or a credit note.

Otherwise, we do not usually accept returns on customer orders.
We are a small business with just a handful of workers. Customer special orders are very important to us, but please appreciate that there is a lot of work involved in dealing with your orders.

PLEASE be certain about what you want to order, thank you!

Returning unwanted books is an awkward & very time-consuming process that costs us time & money that we do not have to spare. (Some publishers will not accept returns, and in that case we might be stuck with an unwanted, difficult-to-sell book, which we still have to pay for!)

For ordinary purchases from the shop (i.e. not special orders) -

  • If the item is faulty, we offer a refund, exchange or credit .
  • For ALL other returns, provided that we think the return is acceptable, we offer only either exchange or a credit note.

Sorry, we do not accept any returns of CDs or tapes unless the item is faulty.
We can play tapes and CDs for you in the shop if you would like to hear them before buying, please ask!
