Langkawi, Malaysia - page two of three

25 June to 4 July 2013

Tracey and I revisited Langkawi, a holiday island off the coast of Malaysia.

Kalim River Tour

After we'd eaten on Thursday 27th June 2013, Tracey and I were picked up at the hotel and taken to Jetty Kilim for the Kilim River tour. This was amazing.

The river runs through the jungle area of the island and the first stop on the boat was the Cave of Bats (no sign of Bruce Wayne), called Gua Kelawar. Having to duck regularly, we were taken into the cave to see the Malaysian fruit bats hanging from the ceiling (flash photography not allowed, so no good pictures of the actual bats). Our guide warned us all not to look up with our mouths open. We were then taken through a mangrove, through another cave and back to the boat.

The trip continued along the river.

We reached a crocodile cave - we did actually see one, though only a baby...

...and onto a stretch of river where we could throw food to the monkeys on the bank. The boat behind us got a little too close and ended up with wild monkeys on the roof and deck.

The river then widened out and we got to see the eagles for which the island is famous diving into the river to catch fish.

Our next stop was a fish farm...

... and a floating restaurant where we had lunch.

Back onto the boat and out into the open sea. We stopped for an hour at a beach that can only be reached by sea, and then only at the right time of the month. It was very narrow and some of the party - including Tracey and I - went for a swim in the sea.

We finished off with a stop at an island with fossils dating back to when Langkawi was beneath the ocean...

... and then onto a hidden lake. We had to climb 50 steps and go down 85 to discover the salt water lake, which is tidal. Our guide said at times of the day it is just a mud bank, but the tide was in when we were there and it looked lovely. The tide enters and recedes through a narrow cave at one end.

We were taken back to Jetty Kilim and back to the hotel.

Here is an article I wrote about the Kalim River Tour.

Here are general pictures from the holiday.
